J and I left the church on a big puffy cloud of love and happiness. We stopped briefly outside the main doors to chat with friends before heading across the street for family portraits.
Our photographers Amber and Bethany were super efficient working through our shot list and wrangling our family members. Allow me to share my tips for family photos:
1. Make a detailed list of which family members you want pictures with and include names (ex. Groom's grandparents Louise and Tim)
2. You and your partner stand still, while family moves in and out for photos
3. Pick a location with a simple backdrop and enough room to corral your families. Bonus points for choosing a covered area in case of rain
4. Appoint someone as a liaison between the photographers and the family. Your photographers are awesome, but they have no idea who Aunt Mildred is
5. Be sure the area is easily accessible for the elderly and small children
6. Consider including you and your partner in all of the shots. It saves time, and would you really display a photo of just yourself with your family? Weddings are about blending families so be inclusive!
Amber counted 1-2-3 out loud before taking each shot and took 6 pictures of each family grouping. The counting really helped J and I keep our smiles genuine, which was tough after so many non-stop photos.
We abandoned the idea of a photo with all of our guests for logistical reasons, but we planned for pictures with both sides of our families and they're some of our favourites of the day. The park was a great location, as our families could spread out and had plenty of time to visit with each other.
40 minutes later, the bridal party climbed into our limo, popped some complementary champagne (the best kind!) and hit the road for SFU.
