Photo Booth Tutorial

I LOVE the idea of having a photobooth at a wedding reception. It's fun, appeals to guests of all ages and provides entertainment for guests who aren't burning up the dance floor.

There are plenty of photobooth rental companies around Vancouver, such as PhotoBooth Vancouver, Universal Photobooth and Butter Photobooth, and your photographer may also offer one as part of your wedding package. Like all things wedding, these aren't cheap, so be prepared to open your wallet to the tune of at least $300 per hour.

Is there a more budget-friendly way to have a photobooth? Absolutely! And you can still offer guests printed pictures to take home. The DIY photobooth is simple: a camera set in front of a backdrop. If you're attached to the mall-style closed booth, consider this: an open booth saves you from seeing all kinds of body parts that guests would be comfortable showing in the privacy of a traditional booth. It happens...

You will need:

1. The Backdrop: a room divider, elaborate fake wall or fabric/ribbons/shower curtain suspended from your venue walls or a free-standing frame. See tutorials here and here to build your own frame.

2. The Camera: You have a few options here. Set up a digital camera on a tripod with a 10 second delay or remote shutter device (try renting items from a local camera or photography shop) or leave out a camera and let guests snap their own photos.

For the tech-savy, you can build your own traditional style booth with printed pictures by adding a computer and following this excellent tutorial.

3. The Props: let your imagination run wild! Feather boas, sombreros, novelty sunglasses, wigs, cowboy hats, bandanas, picture frames, chalkboards and tiaras are just a few ideas. One cute option is various props on a stick. You can purchase these from Little Retreats Etsy Shop or make your own with this tutorial and free download.
